Moscow (AsiaNews) - On 13 of November Vladimir Putin took part in the solemn ceremony laying the foundation stone of the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Singapore. The church will be built on the territory of the Russian Cultural Center, as announced by Interfax news agency. 33 thousand square meters of land were leased for the building, one fifth of which will be occupied by the place of worship. The Orthodox Dormition parish has been operating in Singapore since the end of 2008, but so far the celebrations are taking place in a small rented room.
The ceremony was also attended by the president of Singapore, Halimah Yakob, together with the Russian foreign minister Sergej Lavrov, who said: "The construction of a Russian cultural-religious complex in Singapore will give a great boost to the expansion of relations humanitarians among our peoples ". A RUSSIAN Cultural Centre that houses a Russian Orthodox Church will rise at an empty plot of land in Rangoon Road near Little India, a symbol of Russia's growing ties with Singapore.
